“The information that Dr. Loonam provided is incredibly helpful.”
Dr. Tim Loonam presented at Texas A&M University on March 4, 2024 about practice acquisition and start-ups. Dr. Loonam provided a concise, thought-provoking presentation that explored the challenges and benefits of becoming a practice owner.
Members of the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) are interested in learning more about the business of veterinary medicine including how to own a business. During our school curriculum, we have limited exposure to the details of how this is done. The information that Dr. Loonam provided is incredibly helpful for those of us interested in business ownership as he bridges the gap between what we do learn and what else there is to know. His presentation included information regarding the finances behind owning and running a business, case studies to contextualize how to evaluate personal finances before beginning the process of buying a practice, and the various approaches for redesigning the space once purchased.
Dr. Loonam creates a fun presentation environment that is open to students asking questions and audience participation. From his presentation, I feel more equipped to understand some of the business jargon that I will need to know as well as how to evaluate if a certain space is the right space for me. Additionally, he provided guidance as to when buying a practice is best and what the pros and cons of practice ownership are.
While there is still much for me to learn, I know I am that much more prepared to begin the investigation of owning a practice.

I am not sure how [Dr. Loonam] managed it, but he was able to make the topic of Veterinary Litigation interesting, engaging, and actually fun to learn about. I am incredibly impressed at Dr. Loonam’s ability to explain a complex topic in ways that we can understand and relate to, and most importantly, in a way that got the importance of the message across to us for use in our future careers. I wanted to share that this was one of our most successful meetings and that we got great feedback from our members about Dr. Loonam and his presentation.
